Mr. President
"Our massive tax cuts provide tremendous relief for the middle class and small businesses." – Donald Trump
When I heard about this tax cut plan and the fact that it
would lower my taxes and in the end, put more money in my pocket I was for the
first time during his presidency, relieved.
However, I had many questions.
Most importantly, what would offset the deficit? I mean let’s be real; we all know that our
country is in tremendous debt, so this isn’t something the United States would
just add to the budget. If that’s the
case, I’m sure presidents long ago would have done something similar. Anyway, I did some research and found that
Republicans said they have their sights set on cutting Social Security,
Medicare and Medicaid. Three systems are up for being cut, likely in half. Mind you, Donald Trump repeatedly promised to
NOT cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid during his campaign for
presidency. Anyway, these systems are so
very important to a large percentage of our citizens. At this time, this doesn’t directly affect
me, but right now, without Medicaid my brother wouldn’t be sober and healing
from an autoimmune disease. Without
Social Security one of my dear, hardworking friends would have been forced out
of the home she built with her now deceased husband. I see my retirement; scratch that, with this
new tax cut, with the plan to cut Social Security, (Medicare and Medicaid) I
don’t see my retirement. I see myself
working until I die, unfortunately. I
understand that cutting the funding isn’t the same as completely doing away
with, but if these systems are being cut in half not nearly the same amount of
people will be able to benefit from them.
I would rather my taxes stay the same to ensure that my mother can see
retirement, so that my brother can receive health benefits, so that when people
who have worked so hard endure something that causes them to suffer financially
can see light at the end of the tunnel.
According to what has been released of the tax cut plan, in
the end the wealthy take a disproportionate share. 2019 will provide some relief to those
Americans with meek incomes. Years
following the tax bill those making less than $75,000 will see a tax increase
and those Americans making above $75,000 will still see a cut! Why should any margin of income receive
different treatment? With that being
asked, why would the poor pay more and the wealthy pay less?
Just some thoughts from a 29 year old woman, making less than $75,000 a year and pays her
taxes.
